My little sister is a mom

That wasn’t something I’d ever been able to write before last Thursday, because before last Thursday, it had never been true. But it is now. My little* sister gave birth to a boy and now she’s a mom!

It doesn’t surprise me that Shana, the second of four girls, is the first of us to become a mom. She’s always been a sweet person. She’s sensitive. She laughs easily. She’s a natural caregiver.

I remember coming home from school when I was 7 and she was 5 and she greeted me at the front door and sadly told me our dog had died. I said “So what?” like I didn’t care but I did. I was just emotionally stunted and also a jerk. I think in a lot of ways she was more mature than I was.

For some dumb reason I was an angry kid and there were times during our childhood when I was a mean asshole to her. I could be really mean. Hard to believe, I KNOW! I still feel bad about this. (I am still a mean person in general but now it’s mostly confined to inside my head and usually directed at myself. Don’t worry—it’s productive!)

Anyway, congratulations Shana! I am so proud of you and the person you’ve become and frankly I’m surprised you’re wasting time on tumblr like this. Get back to staring at your baby’s face and thinking about how much you can’t believe my little sister is a mom!

And I guess congrats to her husband Mark too.

*I realize using the word “little” is unnecessary but I still like to think it’s shocking that anyone younger than me can function as a full-grown adult.
